Dear readers,
It has been a busy and, honestly, tiring few weeks. Last weekend, I finally got a chance to get back to reading and audiobook listening: what a reprieve. And while I have various books and themes in mind for this newsletter, I want to recommend a book that has been on my mind ever since picking it up at Word on the Water in London in April (more on the best London book spots here).
Only as I am finalizing this newsletter, did I notice this is the 50th issue! It is a joy to share my thoughts, but even more wonderful are all the conversations, recommendations, and joint book shop visits it has led to. Happy 2-year anniversary and 50th issue!
84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff (1970)
Description: New York-based author Hanff starts a decade-long correspondence with a London bookseller, located at 84 Charing Cross Road. Her witty exchanges with the main buyer evolve into a generous friendship. In the book's second half, she recounts her first visit to London years later and all the new and old friends and discoveries she makes.
My take: This book oozes a love for reading and writing mingled with a wonderful dose of kindness, generosity, and friendship. On top of that, there are charming literature and London references throughout. I absolutely adored it and have already lent it out twice and will certainly be re-reading it. (Link to buy).
Currently listening to: Counterfeit by Kirstin Chen, a somewhat superfluous and thus perfect summer read. (Link to buy).
Thank you for reading this short anniversary edition of the newsletter. My to-read pile is growing. I tend to make up my mind last minute, but Jennifer Eagan’s Candy House will be next. Let me know what you are reading or planning to read next! And if you’d like to see what I am reading follow along on my Instagram here.
